notes: ‘BIG 5’ Questions to Christians
BIG FIVE #1 – DOES GOD EXIST?
Yes. Romans 1:18-32 (the Message Commentary)
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His Eternal Power and Divine Nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
BIG FIVE QUESTION #2 – if God is good, why is there Evil/Suffering?
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
God meant to demonstrate His love by sending his Son Jesus into the world
How would his love be demonstrated?
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
..by giving Jesus over to death for us – a sacrificial lamb –
Death and Suffering existed in God’s plan of salvation
Jesus earthly mission was not an afterthought, and evil was not a mistake that God had to fix
Jesus was God’s love plan before the beginning of time.. before Adam & Eve ever walked the earth or turned from God.. and Jesus’ suffering brought about our salvation as a demonstration of God’s love to His Creation.. a demonstration of love to all beings to ever be Created: those on earth, below the earth, and in the Heavens
Why? for His Glory,
God directed the Prophets/Apostles to write to this end, and that’s the truth
BIG FIVE QUESTION #3 – When is the End of the World?
In Jesus Session #2: the Miracle Birth, we learned that God’s son came to the world – the most important moment in human history. His name was Immanuel because ‘God walked among us‘. Even though He fulfilled every prophecy and sign given of the One to come, as we learned in Jesus Session #8, still men are looking to the skies and looking for a saviour. God came and we missed Him. God stood right in front of us and instead we wanted the perfectly sculpted bronze gladiator, not the peasant carpenter born in the animal shed. **When Is the End of the World? The question assumes that the world has an expiration date and, yes, the Bible is clear that it does. The Bible also lists many signs and wonders that will chase this Armageddon. Outside of the Bible there are many doomsday predictions, many people and cultures thinking they know the exact time that this life will be over. But they are all deceived. We can say this with confidence because of 2 Peter 3:1-11a. Jesus came once and we missed it. Even though many signs and prophecies preceded His coming, we still missed it. He will come again and we’ll be just as clueless. Instead of predicting the end of the world, or even waiting for it, the key, is to be ready for it. In light of this “what kind of people ought you to be?” In Jesus Session #3 Jesus preached, “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand” eternity is closer than you think; when the temporary gives way to the everlasting.
BIG FIVE QUESTION #4 – Heaven/Hell? One Way to God?
o Jesus Session 3 – Kingdom of Heaven Righteous people/lost people, sometimes represented by fish, weeds. The righteous go to the Heavenly storehouse to be with God, the unrighteous go to a furnace, place of weeping and gnashing of teeth, on the outside, forever lost (Matthew 13)
Almost everyone believes in Heaven but don’t dare tell me that Hell doesn’t exist and people can’t go there. Hell is populated by the unrighteous and it is ignorant and totally disrespects God’s word (the Bible) to suggest otherwise.
But how is one made RIGHTEOUS – made right before God – so that they can escape Eternal Punishment and go to Eternal LIFE?
If a Good Life were the Eternal ticket, then the Rich Young Ruler would be the perfect candidate for Heaven. But Jesus said, “SALVATION IS IMPOSSIBLE” – For men, Eternal Punishment awaits, afterall, “all men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23), and “the wages of sin is death”, (Rom 6:23) BUT “The Gift of God is Eternal LIFE IN Christ Jesus our Lord.”
That’s why Jesus didn’t leave it at Impossible. Yes, Salvation is impossible for men – all good works fall short – But Jesus continued to say in Mark 10:27, “All things are possible with”, AND ONLY WITH, “God.”
BIG FIVE #5 – Is God in control, does mankind have FREEWILL?
Paul explains in his letter to the Romans, ch 6 vs 16 you ultimately serve one of two masters. Whether it be the Vanity of the religious leaders in Jesus’ day or the pride of the Israelite Nation or the foolishness of riches – these are all sourced in the same father of lies and they lead to death – this is satan the thief of whom the Good Shepherd warned us (John 10). But don’t be deceived, Jesus came to bring freedom for the oppressed. He did not die so that men could enjoy free will. That’s not the freedom that He brought. Jesus willingly laid down His life only to take it back up again so that men could have freedom from sin. The Good Shepherd offers freedom from the thief of our soul. Rm 6:17-23
So, in beginning to address the final question of the 5 posed: Does mankind have freewill? You tell me. You are a slave to death or a slave to life. A slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. A slave of satan or a slave of God. You serve one of two masters and mankind is not the third kingdom. A servant does the will of his master, so you tell me, whom do you serve? Whose will do you follow? Freewill?! Stop being deceived! No man is free to serve himself. You serve God who offers life or you serve satan which leads to death.. What ‘will’ have you ever had that doesn’t lead to one of those two options?
